Converting Degraded Streams and Lakes Into Community Assets

Raccoon Creek

Living Waters Consultants provided Fluvial Geomorphic Evaluations, Engineering Design, Plans, Details, Specifications, Cost Estimates, Permit Assistance and Construction Observation services with team member V3 Consultants for re-meandering a channelized 12,000 LF (2.3 mile) reach of Raccoon Creek. The project site is located at the Nygren Wetland Preserve in Rockton, Illinois. In the process of stream restoration, diversion of flows from the channelized stream into historic meander channel occurred using geomorphically-designed diversion berms. Re-hydration and restoration of historic wetland areas, streamside wetlands, and backwater wetland habitat also occurred. Additional restoration measures included modified rock vortex weirs for grade control, brushlayers, j-hooks, tree revetement structures, and other measures. Raccoon Creek is classified by IDNR as a Biologically Significant Resource. Previously, the channelized stream lacked habitat for state endangered Iowa Darter. Fish survey monitoring performed by LWC and IDNR indicates that the restored stream and wetland complex has resulted in a 100% increase in fish species richness, 33% improvement in IBI, a BSC upgrade from a “C” class stream to a “B” class stream segment, and re-establishment of several sensitive fish species.
