Engineering for Indian Creek Re-Meandering

National Visionary Award Finalist and ACEC Merit Award - Water Resources honors were received for Stream Re-Meandering Engineering Services by LWC.  LWC was a subcontractor to V3 Consultants.  LWC Engineering Services including Fluvial Geomorphic Evaluations, Engineering Design Plans, Details, Specifications, Cost Estimates, Permit Assistance, and Construction Observation services for remeandering a 4,200 LF (0.75 mile) reach of Indian Creek in North Aurora, Illinois. Project Management, Permitting, Floodplain Engineering, and Wetland Design for 80 acres of riparian wetland were provided by V3 Consultants. The project included large-scale natural channel design planform and morphology restoration in a degraded agricultural ditch. Stream habitat features include 17,500 square yards of native planting and seeding, five wetland side channels, two backwater fish refugia channels, 20 natural rock riffles or rock vanes, 21 excavated pool habitats, 2000 ft of fiber roll bioengineering stabilization, rock deflectors, eight tree rootball revetments, dozens of boulder clusters, gravel bars and other measures. Since 2003, the re-meandered stream channel has maintained a stable channel morphology and acceptable sediment conveyance capacity. The site provides excellent aquatic and wildlife habitat. John Duerr, Executive Director of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County (future site owner ), commented “I’m cautious about being a cheerleader for this corporation (V3 and sub-consultant Living Waters), but they did a great job with this.” LWC observed construction by Countryside Industries.
