Converting Degraded Streams and Lakes Into Community Assets

Headwaters Plan and Report

Living Waters Consultants completed a Stream Assessment, Inventory and Management Plan for 6.1 miles of stream channel over 3 separate sites in Illinois. A detailed Report was prepared providing Fluvial Geomorphic Assessments, Survey Results, Profile, Hydrologic and Hydraulic data, and BMPs for watershed protection. Cross Section Surveys, Project Management, and Structure Reports were completed by team member Berns Clancy Associates. Profile analysis including a historical comparison of stream profiles to document locations and severity of channel downcutting. Problem areas were described in the Report and identified on the Stabilization Plan. BMP opportunities were identified including headwater wetland restoration, regional flood storage, stream restoration, installation of native plantings, gravel control, and other measures. The Plan and Study proactively identified and prioritized stream problem areas. Studies have indicated that urban stream channels can become over 3 times larger due to urban hydrologic impacts. Stream Inventory data can be used to prepare Grant Applications for environmentally sound stream management and to obtain matching funding for Stream Restoration Design and Construction. Benefits of implementation could include stream stability, public safety, improved flood control, enhanced water quality, aquatic habitat, and recreational opportunity.
